PROJECT :

FLESH | FLUENT

ROLE :

Sondra Dorr specialized in Industrial Design & UX| UI Design with a focus on hands-on sculpting and 3D modeling, proficient in utilizing Figma for rendering high-fidelity prototypes.

PROJECT overview

  • Steel Structure: The installation features two semi-circles, meticulously hand-pressed using Everbilt 1/4in.x36in Plain Steel Hot Rolled Square Rods.

Pine Wood Base: The base of the installation is crafted from pine wood, chosen for its durability and aesthetic appeal. The solid frame design ensures stability and counterbalances the installation's other elements.

  • Inset and Inlay Design: The inset design in the steel semi-circles imparts a visually striking, bottomless appearance, complemented by the pine wood frame base. The inlay is deliberately understated to maintain focus on the interactive experience, allowing for an unobtrusive yet visually impactful presence

  • Point of Contact: A pivotal aspect of the installation is the point of contact. As viewers interact with the piece, the line of the two-dimensional plane shifts, engaging with the projected motion and adding another layer, thus creating a three-dimensional spatial element.

"Flesh | Fluent" is an interactive installation that Sondra Dorr conceived and executed, exploring the intersection of physical form and digital technology. The centerpiece of this installation comprises two handcrafted semi-circles, each forming a distinct visual and textual boundary. These barriers, composed of Mylar, serve as canvases for a captivating projection mapping display, featuring fluid wave patterns programmed and colored using the P5.js software by Sondra Dorr.

The true essence of "Flesh | Fluent" is revealed through viewer interaction. As participants engage with the piece, a three-dimensional effect emerges, harmoniously aligning sensory perception with the artwork's interactive elements. This dynamic interplay between the viewer and the installation creates a unique, immersive experience.

Interactive Experience:

Inspired by the concept of the speed of light, this installation was critically evaluated and influenced by the insights of Danish physicist and Harvard Professor Lene Hau. Her collaboration provided invaluable input during the Critique phase, in conjunction with my work at Brown University during in the Fall Semester of 2019 as I attended a sound art media class.
